THE THEATER TONIGHT.

The High Esteem inWhich Horace Lewis"
~ie-Held by Eastern Critics.
The following lines culled from the
Pittsburg (Pa.), Jétrnal will certainly
interest many of those who wilfattend
tonight the Lewis presentation of
“Monte Crist6,”’ and will be to thém
an acceptable evidence of the, high
repute Mt. Lewisis held in as a “character actor throughout the entire East:
“Horace Lewis is essentially a melodramatic actor, and in that line is becoming a shining light in the theatrical profession. He sueceeds as ‘Monte
Cristo,’ because the character fits him
like a glove. WhenT first saw him
play Louis Benneditti in ‘Two Nights
in Rome,’ I said to myself, there is a
man who has no business, playing
sdciety pieces. When I witnessed his
Daniel Druce this impression became
more firmly rooted in my mind, but
upon seeing las: evening his ‘Monte
Cristo’ it became more than an impression—it was a conviction: By
the way, speaking of Daniel.Druce,
everyone will-remember—what-a-pecu-.
liar character part it is. No person
but the late E.L. Davenport was ever
able to make it go until HoraceLewis
attempted it. “Lawrence Barrett made
a dead*failure of the piece. Lewis
made a success of it because his por—
trayal of the-Village Blacksmith was
ti
almost that itis not Daniel Druce, but
Horace Lewis, he was gazing at. Thus
it is with his ‘Monte Cristo’ —magnificently staged, appropriate. scenic effects, and a fine support. Ne wonder
‘the house was packed.” Remember,
tonight will be the only opportunity’
of seeing this great drama in alt its:
pristine scenic glory.
Vhat $10,000 00 Damage Suit.
The Tidings gives vea the following as
the cause of action in the Superior
Cut case brought by M. C, Taykr
to recover from Miles P. O’Gonnor the
sum of $10,000 damages for non-ful fillment of contract: The suit arises over
the possession of some land in the
Limekiln district, where Taylor has an’
iron mine and lime bank. Recently
the C. P. railroad obtained patent to
this section, and Taylor and Jonathan
Butler having each filed on the land
were cited to appear before the railroad land department and prove which
had the best claim—greater improvements to determine the question. Taylor ‘went to Sacramento and there met
M. P. O’Connor, who was acting as
Butler’s agent, and a compro’ .se was
agreed on. Taylor was + wsithdraw
opposition and allow But? ., by O’Connor, to purchase all the iand from the
railroad company, in consideration of
which Taylor was to be deeded twentyfive acres—that part upon which the
mine and lime bank were situated.
According to the complaint, plaintiff
observed the agreement to the letter,
but after-procuring ths deed Butler refuses totransfer the specified acres as
agreed by his agent O’Connor.
