pair of hand-shackles, About this
time Under Sheriff Carter, happening to be coming down Broad street,

the two were unable to make Lawrence procesd on his journey to the
lock-up. Ridley returned with the
shackles ‘and they were placed on
his hands after a severe tussle, and

—————— 2 oe. --A Saloon is a Tavern,
In 1862, A. R. Jenkins, who at
that time had a saloon in this city,
kept it open-on Sunday, and there
being a Sunday law at that time similar to the present one he was arrest

Justice’s Court and convicted; but
appealed to the County Court, which
was presided over by Hon. David
Belden, now Superior Judge of Santa
Clara county. The decision of the
Court was to the effect that Jenkins’
saloon wasa “tavern,” and the law
exempting such places he was ordered discharged. M . McConnell

Sierra County Items,
The following it items we copy from
the Forest City Tribune:
Athree hundred ounce gold bar
was shipped to the mint last week by . ;
the Bald Mountain Company. It
was the result of the previous week’s
washing.
A very nice progpect was found at
the Ruby mine last week. About a
quarter of an ounce of coarse gold
was panned out from a small quantity
of gravel taken from the winze that
had been sunk to a depth of twentyfive feet from the drift above their
main tunnel, The appearance of a
prospect at this point is very encouraging, and great hopes are entertained of reaching the main channel in a short time, After this object is accomplished, the main tunnel
will then be pushed ahead and connection made with the drift
above, which has been run ahead of
the tunnel, to the present time,
about five hundred feet.
