1895 Pictorial History of Nevada County, California (979.437 COM (622.342 NEV, PH 1-4))(2000) (194 pages)
1895 Pictorial History of Nevada County, California, is a 2000 repackaging by David and Ardis Comstock of most of two books originally published in 1895 -- Nevada County Mining Review (1895), compiled by W. F. Prisk and the staff of the Grass Valley Daily Morning Union (144 pages plus 10 pages of ads) -- and Grass Valley and Vicinity (circa 1895), compiled by J. E. Poingdestre (56 plus 16 pages).
David A. and Ardis H. Comstock, editors
1895 Pictorial History of Nevada County, California
(A reissue of "Nevada County Mining Review" compiled by William Frederick Prisk Jr. and the staff of the Grass Valley Daily Morning Union and "Grass Valley and Vicinity" compiled by J. E. Poingdestre with an historical sketch by Samuel Butler)
(To which has been appended a new foreword and a comprehensive index compiled by David A. and Ardis H. Comstock)
vi, 186 pages
Contrary to the statement on its title page, this book is not a "reissue" of the two 1895 publications but somewhat reformatted and abridged reproductions. And contrary their collective latterday title, neither publication qualifies as a "history" in their time.
The aim of both publications was to showcase principal mines -- and to profile officials and prominent local professional, mining, and business men. and business firms -- in hopes of attracting capital investment in the county's then flagging mining industry. Typical of such promotional material, both books are gazetteers and who's-whos, with brief historical sketches but mostly observations and illustrations of contemporary matters.
Compensating for the misleading representation is a comprehensive 10-page index the Comstocks created to increase the value of the two books today as important reflections of their times.
